On February 5, 2024, The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) issued a notice to update and replace Fire Brigades Standard 26 C.F.R. 1910.156 established in 1980 with a new Emergency Response Standard providing essential workplace protection for emergency responder professions.
The new Facility Safety proposed changes are critical considerations in the modernization of Chelmsford’s Fire Stations 3 & 5 to maintain compliance with the future OSHA standards and the safety of our fire department personnel.
The Facility Safety standards modifications include
- Risk mitigation requirements for carbon monoxide exposure
- Prevention of emergency responder exposure to, and contamination of sleeping and living areas by exhaust emissions.
The proposed new requirements are summarized in the OSHA Proposed New Comprehensive Emergency Response Standard document.
